Systems Engineering Workshop Series

The Systems Engineering Workshop Series (SEWS) is a joint activity of various industry leaders, leading researchers and SEC members interested in the various aspects of systems engineering. Its mission is to help SEC members build practical knowledge of the discipline, to complement the academic knowledge gained through the Systems Engineering Education Series (SEES).

SEC members meet leading researchers and practitioners in the field of systems engineering who offer overviews of selected topic areas, which they augment by sharing their own experience and work. Those meetings occur either by site visits (i.e. interaction with practitioners in their environment) or by inviting researchers/practitioners to the UCF campus. Therefore, the workshop is designed to inspire and encourage SEC members to develop agendas for research in systems engineering. While the workshop is anticipated to be of particular value to the graduate student seeking a topic to research for his or her degree, it also places special emphasis on involving undergraduate SEC members in research.

Teams of undergraduate members are challenged to compete on semester-long (4 months) projects using established systems engineering methodologies, as well as state-of-the art modeling tools provided by the Institute for Advanced Systems Engineering. The projects are either proposed by the teams themselves or by leading researchers and practitioners, who are always welcome to serve as advisors. The successful completion of these projects (i.e. complete solution to original problem) relies on life-cycle thinking, synthesis and creativity, team building, problem solving, and management of time, resources, and information on the part of each team member.

Therefore SEWS supports a knowledge transfer mechanism into the heads and sharp minds of UCF young students by providing an environment favorable to the extraction of the knowledge and wisdom of distinguished researchers and practitioners.
